I've been attempting to replace the skeg cable on my plastic valley aquanaut lv. everything has gone well so far - i took out the old kinked cable (by loosening the grub screw on the slider, unscrewing at skeg, pulling cable out etc) and i have replaced it with a new cable using a light coating of furniture polish to help get it up the tube.. When complete follow steps 1 and 2 in reverse order to re-connect the skeg cassette. renewing the wire in a kayak with a plastic skeg box. using an allen key, undo the grub screw (anticlockwise) in the skeg slider at the side of the boat. only undo it enough so that it no longer grips the old wire, not all the way out..
