Paddle Board Volume

This video explains the relationship of volume and user weight, skill level and conditions. for more information, visit: http://blueplanetsurf.com/blogs/news.... Shopping for a stand-up paddleboard (sup) is not as straightforward as it may seem. sups vary in size, shape, colour, and finish. usage is also a variable in selecting a sup; however, the main criteria in purchasing your own sup is the volume of the board and how it relates to your body weight and height.. Volume: a paddle board's volume, expressed in liters, gives an indication of the board’s ability to float with weight on it. the higher the volume, the more weight the board can support. you can find volume for a sup listed in the specs on rei.com..

A novice sup surfer or choppier condition sup, 170lb rider +10%=146l a 170lb intermediate level sup surfer no ratio 133l a 170lb expert rider -10%= 120l (expert rider can deal with -20% but its a good starting point) i use this equasion to figure volume for a rider for any size surf sup from 11' down to 6'.. The volume of a paddle board is how much weight it will displace when in the water. volume is measured in liters because one liter of volume displaces one liter of water. therefore one liter of volume creates one kg of lift, so one liter of board volume will float one kg of weight.. The other super important factor for stability is volume. most beginner stand up paddlers will want a ratio of twice their body weight [in kg] to volume, ie a 86kg person should pick a board around 172litres (86 x 2) give or take 10litres either side.
